Report from Westboro Regional Food Bank ~ by Martine Dore
    September 2025

Each month we are providing food to over 260 unique households. which feeds about 700 unique individuals.

Most of our food bank neighbours, are “regulars” who come once per month. At each visit, food bank neighbours receive approximately 3 days worth of food, curated to the number of individuals in their household.

Food bank neighbours may come for a few months and then stop if their needs change, but Food Bank Canada reports that there has been a 39% increase in households in Canada experiencing food insecurity, with 1 in 4 households struggling to put food on the table. We see those trends reflected here in our food bank usage.

Food bank neighbours receive: A “standard box” which includes canned and dry goods, such as canned vegetables, tuna, cereal, rice and pasta, milk, eggs, frozen meat, bread and fruit and vegetables.

As supplies permit, in addition to food items, we are sometimes able to support food bank neighbours with diapers, feminine hygiene products and incontinence products. In collaboration with Mothercraft we provided approximately 70 backpacks to children in Kindergarten to Grade 3 as they started this school year.

We started, or revived, several initiatives recently, such as: Partnership with Carlington Community Health Centre, Wrap Around Support Initiative –which provides a Wrap Around Worker on Monday mornings to meet with food bank neighbours for practical assistance and referrals. Partnership with Feed the City who provide volunteers to delivery groceries to our food bank neighbours who have barriers to coming in person to collect their groceries.

We have approximately 55 active volunteers, as well as enjoying the support of parishioners who sometimes volunteer for “one-time events”. Many have volunteered here for years, indicative of the over 40 year (and counting) legacy of commitment from All Saints’ Westboro Anglican church to ensure that our neighbours have food on their tables!

We’re thankful for the support of the Ottawa Westboro community!

If you are considering a monetary donation, you can drop off a cheque or cash to the All Saints Westboro Church office located at 347 Richmond Rd, Ottawa, ON, K2A 0E7. All cheques can be made out to All Saints Westboro, with “donation for the Westboro Region Food Bank” on the memo line. We also accept e-transfers to: [email protected].
