Music

Choir

At ASW, music is an important part of our worship. The All Saints’ Adult Choir sings at the 9:30 am service. The choir’s repertoire ranges from plainchant to contemporary hymns. New members are always welcome. We practice every Thursday (September through May) from 1:00 – 3:00 pm.

Please contact our director, Edith Troup if you would like to join us.

Jazz Vespers

Jazz Vespers, November 2018

Jazz Vespers, November 2018

Jazz Vespers is held the first Sunday of each month at 4:30 pm, from October through June, unless otherwise noted.

From ancient times, there has been some sort of reverence or thanksgiving made to mark the end of the day. The service of Vespers is late afternoon or early evening prayer, one of the nine “daily offices” of the Benedictine monasteries. Vespers celebrates the lighting of the lamps as evening descends, and has been called “the hour of peace of heart and serenity.”

Jazz Vespers is a new form of this ancient and universal tradition. Vespers at All Saints’ is a time when people can gather to chase away the shadows of the coming night or the day that’s been, seek comfort and sustenance, renew energy for the coming days, or find peace for an hour or so from an all too present world. All while enjoying some of the best jazz that Ottawa has to offer.

In the lovely Chapel of the Holy Spirit at All Saints’ Anglican Church Westboro, we hear how these musicians interpret the centuries, listen to prayers, readings, and hear words to inspire the mind and spirit.

If you need further information, please call the office or email our Jazz Vespers Coordinator, Elizabeth Brown.

Evensong Choir

The Evensong Choir of All Saints’ Westboro is under the direction of Patricia Brush, accompanied by Edith Troup. On the fourth Sunday of the month, we meet at 3:15 pm to rehearse the Anglican Chant psalms, hymns, and a choral anthem for the Evensong service, which is held at 4:30 pm, in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. Membership in this choir is by informal audition. For further details, please contact the church office. Each summer, we sing at one Evensong service held at Holy Trinity Lascelles, Québec (near Wakefield).

Rare Blend and Duly Noted

Our talented choir members have formed two musical groups that perform occasionally at our services:

  • Duly Noted, a recorder ensemble
  • Rare Blend, a women’s vocal ensemble specializing in songs from the Celtic, folk, and plainchant traditions.

Rare Blend organize and present Celtic Vespers on the Sunday closest to the Feast of St Patrick, and Blue Christmas on one Sunday during Advent. Both services are held at 4:30 pm in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. See our calendar for specific dates.
