Our talented choir members have formed 2 musical groups that perform occasionally at our services: Duly Noted, a recorder ensemble, and
Rare Blend, a women’s vocal ensemble specializing in songs from the Celtic, folk, and plainchant traditions. Rare Blend organize and present Celtic Vespers on the Sunday closest to the Feast of St Patrick, and Blue Christmas on one Sunday during Advent. Both services are held at 4:30 pm in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. See our Calendar for specific dates.
From ancient times, there has been some sort of reverence or thanksgiving made to mark the end of the day. The service of Vespers is late afternoon or early evening prayer, one of the nine "daily offices" of the Benedictine monasteries. Vespers celebrates the lighting of the lamps as evening descends, and has been called “the hour of peace of heart and serenity."
Jazz Vespers is a new form of this ancient and universal tradition. Vespers at All Saints is a time when people can gather to chase away the shadows of the coming night or the day that's been, seek comfort and sustenance, renew energy for the coming days, or find peace for an hour or so from an all too present world. All while enjoying some of the best Jazz that Ottawa has to offer.
In the lovely Chapel of the Holy Spirit at All Saints' Anglican Church Westboro, we hear how these musicians interpret the centuries, listen to prayers, readings, and hear words to inspire the mind and spirit.
Jazz Vespers is held the first Sunday of each month at 4:30 pm, from October through June, unless otherwise noted.
