PASTORAL CARE

HEALTH MINISTRY

OUR PARISH NURSE
The Christian Church has a long history of involvement in healing and care of the sick. Jesus was a healer who restored people to wholeness in body, mind and spirit. Through his example, religious orders and congregations have responded to his call to care for his people.

What is Parish Nursing?
Parish Nursing encompasses the physical, psychological and social dimensions of nursing practice and the integration of body, mind and spirit. The focus of the practice is the faith community and its ministry. Through partnerships with other community health resources, parish nursing fosters new and creative responses to health concerns.

What is a Parish Nurse?
A parish nurse is a registered nurse with specialized knowledge who is called to ministry and affirmed by a faith community to promote health, healing and wholeness.

What Does the Parish Nurse Do?
The role of the Parish Nurse, in collaboration with the pastoral staff and lay team members, is to promote the integration of faith and health in a variety of ways that help to transform the faith community into a place of health and healing. Specific examples include:

  • Health Education- helps to raise the health awareness of the church community by providing workshops and seminars focused on health promotion and illness prevention

  • Health Advocacy - helps members of the community to navigate the health care system and access needed health care.

  • Health Counselling - offers Individual or group consultation, through the office or home visits, to discuss health concerns and to provide support in times of crisis or bereavement.

  • Health Resource Referral - provides information and referral to community health services and agencies.
