GranAid

What is GranAid?

GranAid was begun by six grandmothers at All Saints' to support grandmothers and aunties raising children orphaned by AIDS. GranAid supports children through Fikelela in Cape Town, South Africa. All the funds we raise are sent to South Africa, where the food and clothing needed are purchased, thus benefitting the economy in the region.

Our support is a partnership with Fikelela: They provide the children and grannies caring for them with emotional support. We provide funds so that the children can stay in school.

How Can I Help?

By donating:

Children with teacher$239.00 will support a child in the primary grades for a whole year and $259.00 will support a high school student for a year

Even smaller gifts can help. School uniforms cost $39.00 each. Ten dollars will purchase a school jersey for the winter, school supplies for one month, or a one- month supply of food.

Donations can by made through the church office. Income tax receipts are available for gifts over $10.00. Cards are available if the donation is a gift.

By buying grocery cards
We are selling pre-paid grocery cards that can be redeemed at Loblaws, SuperStores, Independent Grocers, or No Frills stores for the equivalent cost of the card.

By joining GranAid The original GranAid group has expanded and we welcome new members, whether or not they are grandmothers. We hold several fundraising events throughout the year.

Carling Curves members collect 1740 pounds of food for the Westboro Food Bank in March and Starbucks provides goodies every day of the year.

Throughout the month of March members of the local Curves on Byron Ave. at Roosevelt, collected food for the local Westboro Region Food Bank. It took a truck and a van and several trips to transfer the 1740 pounds of food to the Westboro Region Food Bank which is housed in All Saints’ Westboro/First United Church at Richmond and Churchill. In addition the Curves members donated $460. Bravo to the women who work out and help out those in need in our community.

Every day of the year the Starbucks at Richmond Rd. and Roosvelt Ave. donates goodies so that food bank recipients can have a special treat. Congratulations to a wonderful Westboro community minded business.

The WRFB is an agency of the Ottawa Food Bank and serves the area from the Ottawa River to Dovercourt and Broadview Ave to Island Park Drive. The WRFB is open Monday from 11:00 to 2:00 and Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00. It provides three days worth of emergency food once a month to residents in the area who are in need of food. The food bank is run entirely by volunteers who serve well over 200 people a month.

The food that is distributed comes from the Ottawa Food Bank warehouse, donations from church members, and local businesses such as Curves and Starbucks. If you would like to support your local community food bank you may bring your donations of food or money to the church office which is accessed on Madison Ave. Charitable tax receipts are issued for donations of money.
